About Me
The Poet Behind the Words
From childhood scribbles on scraps of paper to published poems, my journey through the world of poetry has been shaped by inspiration, education, and the stunning landscapes of the West of Ireland.
I have always written, if an idea or thought came to me I would scribble it down, even if that was on a scrap of paper or a receipt in my pocket. I feel that I have always been drawn to poetry as an artform. I am not sure how other writers have started but for me it has been gradual. Although my mother did keep my best work – my poem about my school bag from 4th class. Poetry has always been the backbone of what I like to read and what I like to write.
I had poetry published as a teenager and thought that it would continue and grow from there but I didn’t really take into consideration the actual work that was needed for that and then life got in the way.
As an adult I gained an honours degree in English Literature and History from University College, Galway, and a Master of Arts in Poetry from Mater Dei Institute of Education. I have had wide and varied adventures in my career choices but I am currently teaching English and feel I have finally found my niche.
Living in the West of Ireland immersed in the landscape and beauty influences some of the ideas or settings for my poetry.
I have had poetry published previously in Years of Mondays, The Sunday Tribune, Southword, Crannóg, The SHop, The Stinging Fly, A Disturbance of Poets (Audio), Present Tense, Boyne Berries, Force 10, The Rose Magazine. I have also been highly recommended or runner up: iYeats Poetry Competition, The Francis Ledwidge Poetry Competition, The Plough Prize.
